As parents managing chronic pain, we're no strangers to the endless rounds of treatments and interventions that promise some semblance of relief. From massages to medications, acupuncture to aromatherapy, the list is endless - and so is the dent it can leave in our wallets.

Feeling like a DIY pain warrior? At Parent Boo-Boo, we totally get it! From one parent in pain to another, we know the struggle is real. But fear not, because we've got your back (and your achy knees, and your sore shoulders...you get the idea!). Treating pain on your own can be empowering and downright awesome when you have the right tools and tips in your arsenal. Whether it's using heat or cold therapy, practicing gentle stretches, or even just taking a moment to breathe deeply, there are so many ways to find relief and reclaim your day. So go ahead, show that pain who's boss and remember: you're a rockstar parent, pain and all!

6 Ways to Relieve Pain at Home

  1. Shower head(CAN): Are you looking for a delightful way to ease your aches and pains? Say hello to hydrotherapy with your trusty shower head! Turn your everyday shower into a revitalizing spa-like experience right in the comfort of your own home.

Let the warm water cascade over your weary muscles, bringing instant relief and relaxation. Adjust the water pressure to target specific areas of tension, helping to alleviate soreness and stiffness. Whether it's a gentle rainfall or a powerful massage setting, your shower head has got your back (and shoulders, and neck...).

Embrace the soothing power of hydrotherapy to loosen up tight muscles, improve circulation, and promote a sense of well-being. It's the perfect way to unwind after a long day of parenting and managing chronic pain.

  2. Heating pads: I know this is a common sense one, but make your life simpler but getting one that makes treating your pain painless! As we all know, the best treatment is one that you will remember to use and often.

For example, there are heating pads that have an auto-turn off function. You don’t want to be that parent waking up in a startle at 2AM when you suddenly recall you left the heating pad on the couch turned on, from the last time you were on the couch feeding baby and got covered in projectile vomit!

Or what about a heated mattress pad? If you get aches and pains first thing in the morning and have a tough time getting out of bed to tend to your little one’s cries, why not get some help with a warm hug with the touch of a button?

Have you even considered some topical sticky heating pads (CAN) for on the go? What if the cold weather triggers a muscle spasm, or climbing in the indoor playground sent you spiraling into a pain flare? Having a chemical heat pack could be helpful in that diaper bag!

  3. Foam roller: For those of you that haven’t used foam rollers before, be warned! This is no a relaxing endeavor. Expect a degree of pain. There are many youtube videos on how to roll out various muscles on your body. They even have a Foam Roller class at Genesis in Airdrie!

The weirder you feel doing it, the better you likely are targeting those muscles that need a little TLC. You have to be sort of nimble to a degree, but it’s a great gravity body weight exercise too. This has helped me in many occasions where I get a spasm from a muscle pulling joints out of alignment (hip, SI joint, back, knees). Often foam rolling gives me just as good (if not better) relief from a msucle cramp compared to massage therapy!

So make the investment in one reap the benefits of treating yourself at home. I prefer the non-spiky ones, but check out this full body roll vs the travel sized one.

  4. Bath Salts: Do not disregard the benefit of a salt bath. The combination of warm water and Epsom salts can help ease muscle aches and joint stiffness, providing a much-needed respite from the daily challenges of parenting. Not to mention, the aromatic essential oils can help uplift your mood and promote a sense of well-being.

So, why not treat yourself to a little self-care with a bath? Take some time for yourself, relax those achy muscles, and emerge feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle whatever parenting throws your way. Trust us, your body and mind will thank you! Magnesium ones or volcanic salts work best!

  5. Dry brush: Oh, let's talk about dry brushing, the ultimate lymphatic drainage buddy! A simple yet effective way to get your lymphatic system moving and grooving. Dry brushing involves using a brush with firm bristles to gently massage your skin in upward strokes towards your heart. Not only does it slough off dead skin cells, but it also helps stimulate lymph flow, promoting detoxification and reducing inflammation. It's like giving your body a little wake-up call, encouraging it to flush out toxins and keep things running smoothly.

So, grab your brush, show your lymphatic system some love, and brush your way to a healthier, happier you!earn how to do lymphatic drainage with a dry brush!
